Since our establishment in 1969, Surerus has grown to become one of Canada’s largest pipeline contractors by offering a variety of services that are unparalled in the industry. With experience installing pipelines up to NPS 48 in both winter and summer conditions, we have successfully completed projects in a variety of geographic terrains across prairie, muskeg, heavily forested and mountainous regions.
The Surerus Story
SURERUS
In 1969, a then 22-year-old Brian Surerus traded in his favourite Ford pick-up for a dump truck, marking the humble beginnings of Surerus in Fort St. John, British Columbia. Learn more about our journey, which evolved our company into Canada’s pipeline contractor of choice.

2019
1969: Brian Surerus trades in a Ford Ranger pick-up truck for a dump truck and incorporates as Groundhog Enterprises in Fort St. John.
1971: Groundhog Enterprises completes its first pipeline project for Union Oil near Fort St. John. Brian finds that pipeline installation is more interesting than maintenance, and he changes the company name to Surerus Construction & Development Ltd.
1972-1979: Surerus Construction & Development continued to pursue pipeline opportunities throughout British Columbia, eventually expanding to Northwest Alberta.
1982: Surerus Pipeline Inc. is incorporated and continues to pursue pipeline opportunities throughout British Columbia and Alberta.
1988: Westcoast Energy awards Surerus the Aitken Creek Extension Pipeline, marking the first time that a mid-inch project is completed by the company.
1995: The Brazion Pipeline Project was completed in the challenging Sukunka area near Chetwynd. The project won the International Erosion Control Association’s Environmental Achievement Award.
2008: An opportunity to purchase 37 acres of land in Gibbons arises, and a long-term development plan is established.
2011: After being told that Surerus would never complete a “big-inch” pipeline, Spectra Energy’s N5 to CS2 Fort Nelson Loop is completed using mechanized welding. This is the first large-diameter pipeline installed by Surerus.
2015: The Murphy Group and Surerus Pipeline Inc. confirm their joint venture agreement and become Surerus Murphy Joint Venture.
2019: Surerus staff, friends, and family celebrate the Surerus 50th anniversary.
